As expected we’re getting massive amount of traffic on opening, and everybody is downloading the guide at the same time.

Since the files are quite large, it is slowing down our server.

there’s still a few bonus guide left

color-codingOne of the most useful feature of the Auctioneer add-on is the price-based color coding. Soon after you start using the add-on you will notice each auction line is color coded to indicate how good of a deal each item is. Blue means it is the best available deal – the item is very cheap compared to the “market value”; green, all the way up to red means that the item is increasingly more expensive compared to it’s “market value”.

What Is Color Coding?

color-coding-big

Color coding can be found throughout the modules used by Auctioneer, but the “Matches found” line of an items tooltip is where color coding really shines.

tooltip-full

  1. How many times this item has been seen
  2. The current distribution in the AH
  3. The Confidence value for the item

As you can see in the previous screen shot, there are 32 matches of this particular item on the Auction House, and 22 of these matches are in line with the market value (yellow) and 10 are overpriced. This easy to read summary is of invaluable help in your day to day auctioneering.
For example, I usually use this tooltip line to see which Glyphs don’t have below-market competition and are worth crafting.

Obviously the “market value” for each item needs to be accurate, this is where the Confidence value comes in, otherwise color coding means nothing. The higher the confidence, the more accurate the value. Also, you should always be sure to run a full scan before consulting the tooltip to be sure you have the most up-to date data.

dominationThis is something that works wonders on low level items, especially trade skill items required to level professions. The basic idea is that you find an item that you can afford to buyout all of the auctions and then resell for a profit. The screenshots below show you how the AH looked before and after I executed the strategy on the Strange Dust niche. Obviously I sold everything in a couple of days even after marking up the price by more than 350%!

Resetting Prices

price-reset-before

price-reset-after

Obviously not every item in the AH is eligible for this kind of strategy. The ideal candidates are the items that satisfy the following two requirements:

  • The item should be cheap and low level – this is because you don’t want to play around with higher level items that usually have massive competition and are constantly under the spotlight. If, for example, you tried to buyout all the [Infinte Dust] I can guarantee
that in a matter of minutes you would be undercut by at least a dozen sellers.
  • The item should be not too abundant in the Auction House - The golden rule is that you don’t want to invest too much in any given item. Buying out too many items would make it harder to resell and you may end up with bags full for too long.

The right items vary from server to server, so you will have to browse around to find what works on your realm. I suggest you start by looking at low level reagents for professions like, for example, metals (bars and ores) enchanting dusts (stay away from low level essences and shards) and herbs.

Also, I suggest you buyout all the items BEFORE the weekend starts, as Saturday and Sunday are the busiest days on all servers.

WOW! what an amazing response to the contest, its going to be a lot of work sorting through all the comments :P keep them coming!

In this video, I show you a very powerful tool that many people don’t know about. You can use this to find the best selling items on your server as well as the best time to sell them.

HD version is available here

Enjoy!

By posting your items at lower costs than other auctioneers at the Auction House, you will sell more items than other sellers, which is good for your character. You will, however, make less on each item. This method of undercutting must be practiced with caution. There are certain situations where this is helpful, but other where the seller must be careful. The flip side of undercutting is overpricing, a situational strategy that, if used correctly, can yield tremendous profits.

How much should you undercut?

Undercutting too drastically can drive the price of items way too low, diminishing profits for everyone. To avoid this, you should always undercut by 1 copper for both Buyout and Bid values, the minimum amount possible. This yields the same results as a larger undercut (i.e. your auction gets listed before the others) and gives you the most profit possible.

When should I overprice the competition?

There are some special situations where it is a good thing not to undercut your competition. The two most common scenarios are:

  • When your completions auctions are about to expire – using the Auctioneer add-on you will have the ability to see who your competitors are for each item you want to post and when their auctions are due to expire.

    small-egg-overpricing

Here the last auction is about to expire so it’s safe to overprice it
Also note the smaller stack size, to trick distracted buyers into thinking it’s cheaper

  • When you are dealing with high-demand items and the competition is low – For example, Netherweave Bags, which are always in high demand, would be pointless to undercut, because the number of competitors is low, and the item will not sell for much different than the desired price, if at all.overprice-high-volume

An extreme example of a high-demand item (on my Realm) overpriced by an insane amount but still sells.

When should you avoid posting an auction?

In some cases the safest and most profitable route may be even to refrain from posting the auction. This should happen when there is an “undercutting war” going on between many other sellers where prices are driven to the ground by too many sellers undercutting each other.

In this situation you have three options you can choose from:

  • Wait it out – This is the safest strategy, in that you wait for the underpriced
items to be bought before posting your auction at a more profitable price.
  • Overprice the competition – read above for more details.
  • Buyout the underpriced items, and resell them at a higher price. This strategy is a bit risky as it requires a good understanding of the market for that particular item as well as the demand for it, but it is surely the most profitable if executed correctly.

For more on how to correctly price your auction is all in our Appraiser Selling Strategies video.

small-stackStack size manipulation is a technique that I use in my day-to-day auctioneering. The most common way of manipulating the stack size is by splitting item stacks into smaller stacks.

This can be used when the auction house is populated by listings of full-stack items, and will let you sell the items for a little more than if you sold the full stack. This may seem strange at first, but if you think of it this works for the following reasons:

  • Most people see “full” auction prices as opposed to price per unit (as I suggest in the video guides). This means that it is very difficult for them to asses if you are overpricing your listings (most people never bother to check price per unit on stacks).
  • Many times people don’t need full stacks, they just want a few items to craft their recipe or pattern. For example, this works when dealing with tradeskill items like Herbs, Enchanting Mats, Cloths, etc.

Another way of manipulating the stack size is by selling bigger stacks when the auction house is flooded by singles like in the following screenshot.

overprice-different-stack-size-big

This will allow you to overprice the item because, this time, you are after people who are leveling their professions or need a lot of a particular item.

You can find out more about splitting stacks and other selling strategies in the Appraiser Selling Strategies video.

This is the video that started it all. Here I’ll try to answer to some of the most common questions that I receive about this video and how I was able to pull this off.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long did it take to get to 1,000 gold?
I took 4 hours played time over the course of 9 days. You can verify this by looking at the calendar in the top right corner of the screen.
  • Why did you level your character to level 5?
Initially I intended to use Disenchanting as a main source of income, but later decided to just “flip” my way to 1,000 gold.
  • What do you mean by “flip”?
“Flipping” is the practice of buying cheap items from the Auction House and reselling them for a profit. You can learn more in my upcoming videos: “How to Find Items to Buy ” and “Appraiser Selling Strategies”.
  • You bought XYZ for only 10 copper, that’s impossible!
You will be surprised by how many times people sell stuff at ridiculously low prices. Most of the times they just want to get rid of it or they don’t really know how much a particular item is worth. Not everyone is uber l33t on World of Warcraft :-)
  • Where can I download the AddOns you use in the video?
Check out the “Top 8 AddOns for Gold Making
  • I play on XYZ Realm, what should I buy?
  • Unfortunately I don’t have a magic “shopping list” that works on every possible realm. What I suggest you do is learn how to use tools like Auctioneer and get to know your Realm and understand its economy. Very soon you will learn how to find the hidden “gold makers”
  • What’s the name of the song?
    Constellations. It’s a track licensed from neosounds.com.
  • What software did you use to edit the video?
    Sony Vegas
